Happiness Begins at Home

By AC Smith

Arnold Schwarzenegger is just another public figure in a long list of them who found to be unfaithful to his wife.  Like John Edwards, Bill Cosby, and countless others, his indiscretion has gone so far as to produce a “love child.”

Let’s be clear—cheating is wrong.  But it’s important to look into why it happens.   I want to put one possible explanation out there and see what you think.  Before I say this, I want to say to Maria Shriver, and all of the other ladies who are treating their husbands in the correct way, that I do not want to seem like I am slapping them in the face since they do a good job at home.  But my sense is that the majority of men cheat because they are not getting what they need.  I do not know what goes on in the home, but when I was young, I heard women put it upon themselves to keep the man from looking, or if I may say, poking their head around where it doesn’t belong.

Yes, there are exceptions, when men stray for their own selfish reasons.  People like Schwarzenegger, Cosby, and Tiger Woods seem to fit that category.   However, if women attended to their husbands better in all aspects of the marriage, there would be less infidelity.   I hear about too many men going outside of their marriage while I believe they would be satisfied if they were reasonably taken care of at home.   Too many excuses are given as to why there’s a problem in doing that.

Ladies…take care of your man!

  1. my sense is that the majority of men cheat because they are not getting what they need.

I’m reminded of the adage that the ideal wife is a diplomat in the living room, a gourmet chef in the kitchen, and a whore in the bedroom. The conundrum for a husband in that situation, of course, is how he can respect a whore, even if it’s by his insistence that she plays that role; and if he doesn’t respect her, why should he respect the vow he made to her?

  2. What does it say about the man who wants his wife to be a whore, and why should she respect him?

  3. What does it say about the man who wants his wife to be a whore,

The question is rhetorical, I trust.

and why should she respect him?

I think the question is not why she should, but how she can.

Some years ago on another site, a woman posted very eloquently about how she enjoyed her role as a provider of sensual delights to her husband; yet in her last sentence (which I saw only through good fortune as she quickly redacted it) she bemoaned his emotional dependence on her, the cause of which she was evidently not ready to look at. I believe that situation is emblematic of the fundamental problem that is destroying man/woman relationships.

  4. As you can likely agree, the basis of any successful relationship (i.e prolonged satisfaction) is mutual understanding and respect. Levels of dependence, independence, and love are often variable over time, and it requires communication to maintain that understanding.

It’s both up to the woman AND the man to figure out where they fit in. If a both a woman and her husband see her worth as submitting to the man’s desires and view sensitivity as weakness, that’s fine. If they see themselves as co-partners and recognize that they each have emotional as well as sexual needs to be met, that’s also fine. However, if someone evolves (assuming they were on the same page in the beginning) and now wants something different, and both people don’t want to go in that direction, that often spells trouble.

In any case, it’s not solely up to the woman to figure out how to respect her husband, or how to conform. Relationships are a two-way street.

  5. In any case, it’s not solely up to the woman to figure out how to respect her husband

There is nothing to figure out. If he is respectable, and she doesn’t respect him, it’s not because she can’t figure out how, but because she won’t let go of whatever grudge she has against him.
